His dream is weeks, months, years in the making, as the logic of dreams will dictate. It is a study in repetition, the same scene played out over and over again.

He wakes at dawn, with the heat of a high-summer sun beating down on him, the feel of it like a hand against his flank, driving him out of his cool night's protection. His path is winding and rocky, hooves clattering against loose stones, strong legs weakening as he works to crest the rise.

Beneath him, the earth falls away, a straight drop down, far enough to kill him ten times over. He is able to look out over the swamp, over the plains, over the desert or perhaps even the snowy tundra. He can see shapes below, moving about their business, too far too reach.

He backs up slowly, the movements heavy, unable to help himself, and takes three running steps that turn to a leap off the edge of the bluff —

Only to land on solid ground as it shifts under him, rising to meet his feet.

And slowly, inch by inch, foot by foot, the scenery changes...
