But what would he pick as a partner? There were quite a wide array of animals that called the swamp home and even more that roamed the other parts of the world. A few had caught his eye - bats fit his aesthetic, but perhaps a bit too on the nose - over the years, but the muskies had certainly interested him the most. Perhaps he'd try making the area near his own den an acceptable place for one to see if he could even sustain one here with him.
They liked dry places, he'd learned, and dug their dens into elevated soil to keep themselves and future pups warm and safe. The area he lived wasn't terribly swampy but there was always the threat of a flood, so he began to collect large rocks to make a little dam around the base of the gentle hill he lived on. It was a start, he'd give himself that much, but Vigil Keeper knew he had a ways to go. It took him a good deal of effort and time to make a suitable rock wall that blocked off the back area of the hill, hopefully to ward off any unwanted floodwaters.
"Well," he said as he finally settled the last stone into place. "Perhaps that will be enough to bring a muskie to the area."
Time would only tell. He was a patient kin, so he'd have to wait and see if it worked.
