Notes: Herdwick sheep are found in the Lake District of England and are distinct for their “jumper” type coat patterns and “smiling” faces. Their wool is less prized than other sheep breeds as it is very coarse, but it is remarkably durable, as are the Herdwick sheep themselves. They are highly territorial and tend to stick to their own specific pasture which also makes them desirable, as they don’t wander over the steep fells of the Lake District. They are believed to have been imported by Norse invaders and were kept by many notable figures in the Lake Distrct’s history, including Beatrix Potter, who was a large part of preserving the breed into modern times.
