[PRP] A Battle of Wills [Destined Daughter & Smoke and Mud]

Post by CelestialRequiem »

It had grown dark now and Desperate had lost hope of understanding her current location. All she knew was that in her attempt to escape the rampaging totoma she'd fled down into the plains. And though she could see the shadow of the mountains silhouetted by the starry sky, now that night was fully upon the world the chances of her finding the way back to where she had left the....offering were slim to none. At best. On top of it all, her head was screaming, her shoulder undoubtedly bruised and swollen, and- though the bleeding had finally stopped -there was still an open wound in her side. It was impossible to focus on much of anything through the pain, especially when the intensity of it got so bad that her sight faded momentarily.

She could lay down. Just for a little bit. Catch her breath. Reorient herself. Gather her strength. The grass felt soft under her hooves, cool against her legs as she trudged onward in some uncertain direction. It was inviting. And a waste of time. Time she didn't have. Every passing second made it more likely that some carrion beast would tear into her hard-earned offering and ruin it. She had to get back. Somehow...

The conflict of these two desires- to simply rest and to fulfill her duty -only resulted in a literal standstill. A cementing of Desperate to where she stood in the middle of a field, exposed, breathless, and staring absently off into the distance. Or maybe it was just that exhaustion had finally taken its toll.

She could smell the blood.

It was close enough to wonder where it was coming from, a sharp, tangy scent that was like no other. Smoke and Mud stood with her ears alert, her body tensed in case of attack, but there was only the gentle rustle of wind in the grass, the soft flutter of wings as an owl took flight. Around her, most of the creatures of day had gone to sleep and it was only the creatures that awoke at night that were starting to slip out of their homes and into the shadows.

Smoke herself was far from home; she had wandered aimlessly along, letting nothing but her hooves carry her to wherever they would lead her, and now she wasn't entirely certain where she was, other than the wide, inviting expanse of plains before her. It wasn't enough to make her panic; she'd make it back, eventually, but was in no hurry to do so.

And she could still smell the blood.

Pushing through the tall grass, she came out onto a clearing somewhat abruptly, the grass disappearing to reveal a flat, uneven ground below. A kiokote stood in the center, wavering slightly, and here the stench of blood was stronger.

Smoke's eyes flitted towards the kiokote, over her unfamiliar face, her short cropped hair glinting in the moonlight. "Are you hurt?" she asked, voice low and calm.

Instantly, Desperate tensed, ears flat against her skull and posture defensive. The voice had startled her, surprised her. She'd let her guard down. Such a stupid, careless mistake.

She whipped around to face the source, too quickly, and stumbled a couple of paces before steadying herself. With just that small amount of effort she was already panting and her eyes squinted against the darkness, struggling to pinpoint where this other kin was in a world that was becoming worryingly blurry.

"I'm. Fine...." She was not. If the strained voice wasn't enough of a sign. Or her heaving sides, struggling to breathe. Or how she wavered slightly as she tried to stand still. Or the faint shimmer of moonlight reflecting off of something dark and wet on her flank. If none of those alone were enough, then together they painted a pretty clear picture.

"Go....Away." Desperate moved as if to walk away from the other, but the motion suddenly sent a spike of pain up her injured shoulder and the shock of it brought her to her knees. Any small hope she might have had in appearing even slightly intimidating vanished in that instant.
