Winters in the mountains were so tough, and the cold just became a part of life, sinking into every little bit of you. But this winter was especially ferocious, and the winds were terrifyingly fierce. He braced himself against the howling winds, as his herd tried to find some kind of shelter. The lambs weren’t quite newborn and helpless, but they were still small enough that there was a very real danger of them being blown from the mountainside.
A panicked bleating was barely audible above the noise of the storm, but he saw a couple of youngsters tumbling. Quickly, he lunged through the snow and caught them against his side. He dug his hooves determinedly against the snow and lent into the wind, as stubborn as the mountain.
“Don’t worry,” he yelled above the snarling wind, “I’ve got you!” He held his position stubbornly until there was a break in the weather and the herd could scramble off the sheer face into a sheltered valley. “You did well,” he assured the slightly stunned youngsters, and one shook their head, blinking up at him. “Thanks for holding onto us!” they said. The pair’s father trotted over and nodded to Totoma gratefully. “It’s a good thing you’re so sturdy,” he rumbled, butting his other offspring gently to bring them around from their shock.
