[PRP] Renewal (Artisan x Serenade For Two)

It was strange to be alone in the swamp. Stranger still to be a fraction of himself. Once, he'd had—he wasn't even sure what they could be called, but there had been others. They were only vague faces and swirling feelings, now. It was a lifetime ago and it seemed that he was on a third one.

There was his first life with blurs of want that had led to a deal. Why it was made and even who it was made with, he couldn't quite recall. He knew that after it, he had changed. A second life. The one with the friends or were they enemies? Was there something in between all of that? Did it even matter? Perhaps not, now that the deal had been—had it been broken? Or lost? What was it for and what had it offered? Did he still have any of it now or had he lost it? To have memories, he thought it must be a boon and yet perhaps that would have been a curse. To remember . . . would he then have guilt? Or fear? It was impossible to tell.

He'd left the crowd behind once the night had broken and they, the ones severed from a second life, had been left shellshocked. He wasn't sure who he was or what. He'd burrowed himself down into a rough pit of a den under a shard of rock and tangle of tree roots. To hide and to think, but then he'd mostly whittled sticks and braided willow strands. He crafted with whatever materials he could find and it wasn't right, but it helped to do something and to make something.

But it wasn't enough. It wasn't a life. He needed more. Maybe if he could find that, he could build the desire to search out answers.

What that more was, he didn't know. There was no path outlined in his mind as he pulled himself from the den and looked into the swamp.

One hoof lifted, paused in the air. Then it came down and pressed down into the hard dirt. Another one followed, and then another one after that.

If you ask a kin how they met their other, most would have a meetcute story. Sometimes embellished, other times fabricated entirely, it ran the gamut. And sometimes a meetcute was a physical run in. Such was the case when Serenade for Two witnessed in real time what fierce determination and aimless wandering looked like. Because hello, it's not like she was a shrinking violet and blended in with her surroundings. She had nice hair for swamp's sake! It could be argued that it could have been avoided. Yes, she could have stepped aside, but with blatant disbelief, she, too, was surprised when the buck walked right into her. In bright daylight. Her jaw dropped in disbelief, and out tumbled the bundle of flowers she held previously.

"Hey!" she half shouted. It was done. Her flowers strewn haphazardly across the floor, and she was at risk of being invisible! And maybe a little self centered because not once did the kimeti doe notice that the other kin may be distracted with their own thoughts.

The shout struck him like a lightning bolt and he froze, blinking vibrant eyes. He hadn't felt the impact of their bodies colliding nor had he noticed the bright blue and white, capped with pale sun gold hair, kin in the first place. (In his defense, it wasn't like he was hard to see, either. He glowed for—) A chord of irritation screeched within him, a sensation of déjà vu rippling through him as his mouth jutted into a scowl and he lectured a—orange eyes bleary with pain. He swallowed the growl that threatened to spill from the . . . memory? Or was it a dream?

He pulled back, hooves stamping quickly, and surveying the flowers that spilled across the ground. Shaking his head, his mane of hair sliding against his horns and face, he breathed out. He didn't know how to respond. He didn't know who he was. Was this his fault or hers? Did he apologize or insult? It frustrated him and on instinct he began to sweep the flower buds into a pile with his forked tail. Cleaning the mess, that seemed familiar . . .

"I," he started, "was distracted." It was not an apology or an insult, but it was something. An attempt at speech that he had neglected for too long. A line that opened him up to conversation. He wondered, again, who he had been before. She hadn't been there, she didn't glow like they did. Maybe that was better; a fresh start, a new him.

Her automatic thoughts to the statement were not kind. But that was not a path that led to good things. So perhaps this was a day for humility after all as she swallowed down her base instincts.

"I see." There, that was neutral. And a response. She knew how to hold a conversation. But she really could not let bygones be bygones with her flowers on the ground.

"So..." She quickly amended. "I hear that zikwas tend to be blind." That was also neutral of a statement. She wasn't accusing anyone she told herself as she bent down to gather up her flowers.

The zikwa stopped in his movements of sweeping the flowers together, wondering if the doe wasn't the one who might be blind. He settled his gaze on her, because he clearly had eyes that were incredibly hard to miss and worked perfectly well. They glowed!

"I imagine you hear a lot of things that have various degrees of truth in them. Although, if you missed the fact that I do indeed have seeing eyes, perhaps kimetis are the ones that tend to be blind," he retorted. He might not remember much of his life, but he remembered the naivety and judgment of kin. With his forked tail, he curled each end around a fallen flower and lifted it. A prehensible tail was definitely a gift and he used it now to raise the flowers to his nose.

Flowers were familiar to him, as were herbs and plants in general. They weren't useful in crafting on their own since they didn't to fade and wilt and rot. But he'd used them for other things once, a paste spread across blood—he shuddered, a swell of violent emotion storming through his body.

A sigh, "I'm sorry for running into you and making you spill your bounty." Although he couldn't help thinking to himself that she could have moved out of his way if she'd been paying attention, too. A rebuke twisted through his mind, but the words were more like birdsong. "I don't remember who I used to be, you see, and the cobwebs of that life can be consuming, always trying to understand what happened." It was no way to live; his hiding in the den had proven that. But then, this . . . He wasn't sure coming out was living, either.

It was one surprise after the other- first the nifty tail and then the admission that the zikwa was without their own personal lore. He didn't remember himself. What on swampy grounds!? Was there any greater tragedy than not knowing one's own origins!? Were you not a compilation of your past self, decisions, and encounters? Questions beget more questions and existential internal debate. It was a sad story, but she wasn't the type to shed tears over a stranger, and nor did this stranger seem the type to appreciate such an overture. But seriously, who compares life to a mess of cobwebs. The kimeti swallowed down the hostility she felt rising when he called her blind. Ugh. the nerve. But at least she knew who she was. And with that, she remembered a bit on how to hold a conversation because the zikwa seemed like he could tell some fascinating stories. If he remembered them. She tried to ameliorate the previous blunder.

"These white lilies supposedly represent new beginnings." She hadn't taken the flowers back from him. He seemed like he needed them more now with a threatening cloud of melancholy surrounding the buck. If she wasn't careful she would descend to the madness, too. Because what if she were to wake up one day and lose all her memories and what made her her? She had to get out of the spiraling thoughts quickly.

"Here. You can have them. For bumping into me."

Bright eyes turned to the doe, surprised. White lilies, new beginnings. He had no idea if that was true, but then he had no idea of many things anymore. Perhaps it didn't matter if it was true, perhaps it was merely the thought that counted. A belief.

"Thank you," his voice wavered, a heaving of emotion settling in his throat. It was the first gift he could remember, but it would be a waste to keep them all. They would wilt and rot, eventually, and then they'd be no better than he was. A memory scattered.

"You should keep some, yourself," he spoke as he lifted a flower with his tail and carefully threaded it into the mess of hair that crowned her. "They suit you more, I think," he smiled as he threaded another into his own mane of strands, "don't you think?"

He was a mess of shadows, really, and it was hard to tell anything about him besides the bright glow and eyes. Maybe that was part of the problem. For all his differences, he was a bit indescribable.

"I don't know if it used to be my name or even if I had a name," he admitted after a moment, "but you may call me Artisan. I can make things from branches and gems, if you would like something."

It seemed like she was having a conversation with herself more than she was with the other kin. If he couldn't remember himself, could he remember his own friends and family? Maybe this kin needed a friend. it's not like she was in the habit of collecting lost things. She liked to choose the best from the best, but this kin was different. It didn't mean they would be friends forever, but maybe she could lend a gentle ear just for today. And while it was tempting to take him up on the offer of something beautifully made (who didn't love sparkly things), her heart was heavy with his sad story.

"Here, how about I show you where you can find more of them and I'll pick up my own set. I'm great at finding beautiful things! And while flowers are more ephemeral than your crafted items or gems, I think there's beauty in them. You get to enjoy them in the moment and for whoever long they last. Best part! You say you don't remember much about yourself. What if you hated lilies in the past? You're a blank state now! You can like or hate whatever you like. Or maybe it'll jog your memory. Who knows. I know I do my best thinking when I'm on the move or thinking about something else."

And with that, the Kimeti led the way, not once looking back to see if the buck would follow. She held her head up high. Even if he didn't, that's fine. It was his choice. But maybe he would want companionship and a listening ear. Or if he didn't, she hoped the flowers would bring him joy, relief, or whatever he needed for them.

Her stomach grumbled. She told it to be quiet. She would find food along the way back to the white lilies.
