Sleepless looked up with the bright, jackalope-cooing smile still plastered to her face. She looked from the buck, to the doe, and back to the buck again.

"You don't look like a rabbit," she said, then turned back to the jackalope again, "but you do! You do! You're a real bunny, aren't you, with the cutest widdle floppy bunny eaaaarsss."

Wow.

Just - wow.

That cut With or Without You deeper than any rock could. This Legendary had just dragged him out into the filth and roasted him to a crisp in the misty bower's shade.

It hurt.

"Just because I don't have bunny ears doesn't mean I'm not a bunny!" he cried, "most of my family are bunnies! My mother's an entire jackalope! I've got the bunny tail -"

He sprung around to show off his butt.

"- look, there, it's clearly a bunny tail! I'm a real bunny, I am! I am!"

It was not evident from under her fluff but she definitely cringe-squinted when the mare said...unacceptable things. This boy was fragile enough as it is, he didn't need encouragement to fall apart.

"You are, honey," she drawled and rubbed against him with her soft head, "your ears go back...like that...you've got the tail...don't worry about it. If the kiddies look like you, well, they would still be buns t' me."

The buck clearly had a complex.

Under any other circumstance, Sleepless might have been mortified at what she had wrought. But she was still intoxicated by the adorability of the jackalope, so she was not.

"That's really specific, but why not," she cooed, not having taken her eyes off the jackalope this whole time, "I can totally understand why you would want your children to be as rabbity as they could possibly be - or jackalopey, as it were. Maybe the Motherfather will too."

She hummed a little.

"Okay," she said, "you're blessed.

"And you're blessed, aren't you, you little cutie," she cooed at the jackalope, "you're naturally blessed...with cuteness!"

With or Without You squinted at her. He wasn't sure she'd even closed her eyes.

"That's great thanks," she said with as much haste as a doe like her could muster, "I think we'll leave now, gotta date with the mushrooms on the other side of the swamp."

"Ohhh," she said, "do you really have to go?"

They really had to go. Sleepless called goodbye from the mouth of her bower until the jackalope was out of sight.

It was some hours later that Sleepless suddenly realised she had never even checked how the jackalope horns joined to the skull.

But that was okay. Maybe not everything had to be in the name of science.

Maybe in the name of cuteness was okay too. c:
