"Ohhhhh!"

This time, the emotion definitely showed on her face.

"This is even more beautiful than the others," she said, the awe, for once, evident in her voice, as she peered up and down the fluffy masterpiece, eyes wide.

Then she realised she was really close to the product...and also the buck...and humbly stepped back.

"Would that really be acceptable?" she said, not quite looking at him, because her heart was beating embarrassingly fast for some unknown reason.

“Yes,” he said, suddenly flustered. “That would be acceptable.”

Rawhide did not usually feel much. Of course he had the normal range of emotions but he rarely felt an intense gripping of his heart when looking at someone.

He thought perhaps he was simply happy she loved his work. Or it was the way her eyes went big in her admittedly very pretty face and she had drawn out the awe-filled ‘Ohhhhh!’.

“You should try it on and see how it feels,” he suggested, trying to get back to business.

"O-oh, thank you," she said, even more unable to look at him, now that he was even closer, draping the pelt around her shoulders and all that.

But - ah, it was really marvellously warm. She was suddenly aware it must have been very cold indeed, considering how very warm she felt all of a sudden, with the wolfskin across her back.

It must be the wolfskin, it was so fluffy and thick.

"It feels wonderful," she said, still unable to look at him.

He was careful to remain professional as he draped it across her shoulders, tugging it this way and that so that it sat nicely, and then he stood back to admire her.

“It suits you,” he said, not feeling professional at all.

In fact, he was very much considering letting her walk off with his finest skin and not caring whether he got salt in return or not.

She stood there, simply experiencing the luxurious warmth. It was everywhere, even in her cheeks, which was quite impressive considering the fur was only across her back.

What an incredible masterpiece.

"I'll be back in a week," she abruptly said, dipping her head, "with the salt. To pick this up. Thank you so much."

Her voice might have wavered a little, with the inexplicable thump-thump of her heart.

It was a promise. He heard it in her voice.

Even so, Rawhide hesitated a moment before he took back the hide, unable to avoid brushing her skin with his own as he transferred the hide back onto his own shoulders. Even in that short time it had taken on the warmth of her body.

"A week then," he said, nodding to confirm. "I'll be here."

Now that she was to leave, she suddenly thought: she'd like to take a last look at the buck - the hide, the hide, a last look at the hide.

She looked up.

Ah.

The black hide really was very striking, against his white and red fur.

He really was very striking.

Her heart was beating fit to burst again, and the residual heat of the hide burned in her cheeks, but she didn't quite want to look away.

Still, she had to go. A turtleshell's worth of salt wasn't going to dry itself.

"I'll be back," she said.
