[ORP] The Way Home

Post by Ruriska »

It takes them most of an additonal week to work out a plan that sets them free, and then it's a long, hard journey, Ache heavy in their hearts, that draws them back toward the swamp. You're welcome to RP any or all of this week, either in this ORP thread or in separate threads in the RP subforum.
It had taken them so long to find the way out, long days spent searching, climbing and squeezing through narrowed spaces. All the while the ache had started gnawing at Illuminating’s belly, a strange new feeling that urged her to keep going. There was no returning home now. There was only the way forward and the promise of a new world.

At least without the mist to muddle their senses, the task actually felt possible and so they continued until finally, finally, they found the way out. The first step towards home.

Just the thought of walking through the obelisk had made Illuminating’s skin crawl and bile rise in her throat, the shadowy grey world beyond where no sun lived. And that decision was made even more right in her mind, when they finally found their way, the cave entrance bathed in sunlight, a glimpse of trees and life beyond, the sound of birdsong and the brush of fresh air.

For the very first time, Illuminating left the cave and stepped blinking into the sun.

It was warm.

Just as she’d hoped.

Warm and comforting and all she’d never known she’d needed until now.

With a smile, Illuminating turned and looked back at the others.

“We did it,” she said in delight.

There was still a long way to go, a difficult journey was ahead. She didn’t mind. It just meant she would get to see even more of the world and experience hardship with companions by her side, like heroes in a story.

[imgleft]http://www.matope-swamp.com/images/maxx ... uncert.png[/imgleft]Just the feeling of sun on Halo's back was beginning to breathe new life into the old doe.

Something deep in the core of her did not trust the beast which had emerged from the Obelisk. The way he moved was not natural, the way he spoke so callously felt off, and overall? Halo of the Sun was old enough to know better than to trust strange kin who came to you with impossible-sounding propositions. She had taken this journey out of a sense of duty, not out of dedication to the art of the Obelisk or whatever, and she knew when the getting was good when it came to getting out of dodge.

Sure, it took work getting out of the caves. It always did.

But she wasn't alone- she had the others from the expedition that had gotten enough sense through their skulls to not trust strange tar men who showed them horrors beyond their comprehension. (Shockingly few. She really did not understand why the hell there were so many who were gung ho about slimeboy.) Not to mention, she had done this once before. She had been younger then, sure. But these old bones were still kickin', and she was ready.

The sun sung to her from far away in her dreams, and as they ascended, she heard its call grow ever closer. Until they stepped out of the mouth of the cave and into its brilliance once more.

"Long walk ahead." Halo groaned, stretching her thin little legs as the world finally had space for her to do so again. "I've got half a mind to take a nap right here while the sun's still up to keep us warm." But in the depths of her mind the Aching told her she didn't really want to pause this journey before she was finally home.

"That was awful!" Scars Upon Scars announced, unmitigated cheer in her voice. "I haven't hurt this much since I fell down a ravine! And you do these things for fun, siblings?"

She had heard that surface kin had experience with the Obelisks, and had been going to different environments despite the Ache to...do something. Related to those Obelisks. It sounded horrible. A shame that she spent so much of her time underground licking rocks instead of doing that.

And now she was above the ground, feeling the warmth from the sun. It...did not feel like she expected.

A little underwhelming, actually? The warmth felt a bit soft. It was much warmer down below. Toasty, even. But then the sky couldn't fall down on them like a cave could, so there was that.

Or...at least...she thought the sky couldn't fall on them. Right...?

"That Ache they spoke of is no joke! So we...keep going? Which way? Will it stop hurting eventually or is this just my life now?" The zikwa contemplated leaning on her cave worm, but what if it was as sore as she was? She didn't want to squish the poor thing.

Then she would have to train a whole new creature! And who had time for that? She had a whole new world to explore!

[ORP] The Way Home

Though their search for a way out had helped the smaller group bond, getting to know each other as they pushed through tight spaces and sought the sun, out here in the world, Illuminating could help but feel uncertain again. The world was suddenly so very vast and her knowledge of the underground was now useless to her and the others. It would be the other kin, those who had come from the swamp, that would be able to lead them there the safest.

She felt particularly secure alongside Halo of the Sun, the older Zikwa a source of comfort. Here was a Zikwa doe who had done this once before and just following in her hoofsteps would make the journey that little bit easier.

As for Scars Upon Scars, Illuminating had already sheepishly apologized to the other for losing her earlier, becoming so smitten by the underground tree that she’d simply lost track of her companion. That wouldn’t be happening this time. They were both new to the outside world and staying close together would help them both.

Or at least, Illuminating hoped that’s how Scars would feel too.

The mist-choked world below seemed so very far away now.

A lifetime ago.

“I’m sure we will have plenty of time to nap,” she assured Halo softly, eager to begin. Despite the trying climb upwards, the sun was invigorating and the Ache ever pulled at her chest.

“Shall we go on?”

A moment to catch their breath and onwards they would march.
