Shallow Waters had been wandering around the various bonfires stopping and listening now and again before he found one that had younger kin, most couldn't have reached adulthood long before, and some were younger yet. With a grin at his mate, he stepped in closer, and in a lull began to speak, the story he began weaving one they'd heard as young colts growing up. A story passed around to get the young to actually listen and settle down for sleep. If the sun slept, surely so could young foals, right?
"I heard that the sun uses the water in the deepest part of the great waters where no kin can swim when it's too tired to be up in the sky warming us and the swamp as a whole up."
His words made several look up in surprise, they hadn't seen him approaching but they easily made room for him, wanting him to continue. Shallow Waters gave a nod of understanding at their surprise, figuring it was more his story, than his sudden presence and speaking, though really it was both. "It's true! It wakes in the morning refreshed after spending so long down in the cool water regaining it's strength. The elders where I grew up said the moon was the sun dreaming about being up there still, not wanting to leave all of us in the dark if possible, though even the moon grows tired, and dark for a few days and needs to rest."
With a slight shift of his body to get more comfortable, Shallow Waters looked around the collection of wide eyes staring at him. He'd told this story to all their children, so it was nice to pass it along to yet more. "It's true, the sun sinks down into the waters, and stays there cooling off and resting while the moon is up in the sky, and finally when the sun feels rested again, it wakes up and comes back out of the deep water and slowly makes it's way back up into the sky, warming up the swamp and all of us in it."
He looked to his mate and smiled. "We live on the water, and can confirm the rising and falling. Some times, way out on the water it looks like its steaming and boiling where the sun is going down into it to cool off." a trick of the light and weather but he didn't know that. "And when it rises again the water is calm and smooth, because it's cooled down and ready to go again. It just goes to show you, that everything needs to take time to rest and sleep so they're able to do their very best each and every day hm?"
There was a low murmur from the younger kin, the older ones among them glancing at their sleepy younger siblings, and a few of them seemed to catch onto the story at least a little. "I hope you all enjoyed the story, and remember it to tell others you might meet. In the mean time, perhaps some of you are ready to go dream of the sun and the moon?" it sure looked it! He watched several of the youngest kin be led off to rest, while another story started up, and he settled in to listen for awhile.
