[PRP] Caught Unawares (Breach x Sand Shark)

Post by anemosagkelos »

A brief visit to her mothers and the meeting of half-siblings, which she knows will have to be expanded on some other time, is all she makes time for before she finds herself preparing to trek back to the ocean that is her home. And yet there is a hollowness, disappointment settling into a crevice that has cracked ever so slightly open within her chest, that haunts her mind.

She'd thought something, what she isn't even sure of herself, might happen or change and it hadn't. A frown resides persistent on her mouth as she hunts for a filling meal that will tide her over during the harsh journey outward towards the ocean waves. This is the fourth--or maybe even fifth--prey she has settled her eyes on. A fat slinking lynx that has enough meat for at least two, if not three, kin. Perhaps even more than that.

The doe hunches down, ready to break into a run, and--
In a lightning-quick flash, Sand Shark was after the lynx, hooves nearly silent as they fell upon the soft dirt. He had stalked the beast for what felt like an eternity- a lonely, hollow gap in the stretches of time until he found his second soul once more. He was not entirely sure where Land Shark had gone, but he forced the misery from his mind- did not let himself wander idly and morosely, begging the MotherFather to return him to his sister. There was life beyond when the two of them were together, and he was going to make the most of it.

And that included eating.

The kill was quick and easy, fangs sinking into the beast's neck followed by a stomp to break it and end its misery. Sand Shark's chest heaved with exertion as he stood over the lynx, trying to parse out how best to go about eating.

It occurred to him he wasn't alone.

"Oi! Sorry bout tha'," he called, demeanor instantly shifting to a more relaxed one. This was a lady,
after all! He stepped away from the lynx and gave a bow of his head, inviting her over.

"Care to partake in some fine meat this afternoon, ma'am?"
Alarm flooded into a half-formed wave of rage as another kin ambushed the meal she'd had her eyes on. The rage crashed into surprise as she took in the acha's appearance. It was like none she'd ever seen before. Extremely different from the buck that had tied her tongue in knots. The one who--she tensed her shoulders as she forcefully stormed into the area. That lynx was supposed to be hers. And she wasn't going to just find another prey to stalk after he'd screwed up her hunt. Not a chance.

Only where she expected fight, it appeared there was none to be had. Damn. The want to yell had been so appealing and easy a moment ago. Now it spiraled away and left, well nothing that she knew to do with in its place. Preparation and journeys, she understood. Emotions were harder to pin down and straighten into definitions.

"Why do you have to be nice?" the doe sighed, at length, not even answering his question. The strange tail intrigued her but it was submerged under layers of verklempt. (Great; now she was inventing words to describe the choked--or was it churning--oh fu--) "I'm not even hungry anymore."
Well. That made a right load of no sense at all. Sand Shark blinked, his brow furrowed in complete and utter bafflement as he stared at the stranger. She was... mad? That he was giving the lynx back? This was worse than dealing with Landy, really. Landy, at least, was his sister. At the end of the day, they couldn't hate each other. But some random stranger...

"I mean, um. If ya want rudeness, then, fine...? I'll keep the lynx?" Did it make sense? Absolutely not.
But Sand Shark was equal parts a lover and a fighter, and could drop between the two like that. Swishing his tail, he cocked his head to the side.

"Ya wanna tossle for it? Or... just. Not have it???"
"And that," she sniffed, derisive, "that only makes things more complicated! How do I know who you are if you go changing your spots to stripes and then to freckles!?"

Irritation raked against her spine and her fur began to stick up in tufts. Why couldn't kin just be who they were? What made them camouflage themselves into prey or predators, into fake beings and emotions? A growl of frustration erupted as she stalked forward.

"I'd trounce you. I'm a predator. You're just a fish!" she hurled, eyes narrowed, as she decided that whether she was hungry meant nothing. That lynx would be hers. And if she had to drive him into the ground, she would do so.
"Apparently, you don't really care to know who I am! I'm just tryin' to see what makes you happy, and that ain't workin too well for me!" There was an uneasy edge to his voice, and the spines along his back were tense, standing on end. If it was a fight she wanted, well. Sand Shark had tousled plenty time with Land Shark, and he had the teeth and the kick to back it up.

"And who's ta say I'm not a predator, huh? Considerin I brought down that lynx, I might wager I'm pretty good at huntin!"

Oh motherfather. He was egging her on. Sand Shark cursed himself, standing firmly now over the lynx.
This was what being nice to girls got him, in the end.
Breach froze, "What do you care what makes me happy?" she asked with a surprising amount of fear. Bucks did not care about her; especially stupid achas! And why would this one be any different?

But then the thought of him, all spindly limbs and flashing colors--giggles broke in guffaws.

"A lynx is small game compared to a boar," she snorted, indelicate, and sidled forward. "And a boar is nothing compared to me." The challenge was very evident in her voice. She grinned ferally.

“Look ‘ere, love! I can tousle but I ain’t really lookin’ for a fight! You want the boar, you got it! You don’t, that’s aight too!” He had no idea what was going on anymore. She wanted the food, she didn’t. She wanted to fight, she didn’t. At some point, Sand Shark had begun backing away from her, a slow and careful movement. Keeping his eyes perfectly on her.

“Look see, I’ll just. Be on my way. Ain’t no trouble to be had here.” Sand Shark gave her a lopsided grin, a sort of apologetic and sort of care free expression.

“‘E can both be on our merry ways, yeah?”

Of course, he didn't want to fight. Not her, anyway. And with that, she was still at a loss. She let her legs flood and deliver her to the ground.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore," she admitted. It was more to herself than it was to him but she wasn't exactly not sharing the information either. "I'm a predator, so I fight. A stupid buck turns me into a damn puddle and then leaves. I find food but someone takes it before me. I stand up and everything changes." She closed her eyes, rested her chin down on the dirt, and wondered why everything was so hard.

She'd never had trouble alone. The occasional sickness of missing her mother and birth-mother, sure. She'd failed and succeeded. She'd never quite been left before. Emotions were difficult and she really hated them all. She only wanted to be the creature in her naming dream; it hadn't felt anything but the need to survive. Hell if she knew what she was even surviving anymore.

"I wouldn't know merry if it bit me at this point," she moped. And it was true. She wouldn't have.

“I mean. I ain’t that smart a guy, but. Settin’ your whole identity, whole life on one thing seems a right load o’ shite to me.” But that was him thinking too much, letting himself get roped into this. Sand Shark had stopped in his retreat and was making his way back over to the doe, cautious in his hoofsteps but equally curious. There was a lot on the dame’s mind, seemed like. Still a good distance away, he laid down to join her, a curious blink at her.

“Why do you gotta have somethin’ that you are, huh? We ain’t just flat ideas. Concepts that can be boiled down to one word. Nah, we all made up of more than tha’.” That’s what it seemed like to him, anyway. He and his sister, they were both of them sharks. Land and Sand, predators of the sea brought to shore. It didn’t much get to him anymore. Because he was more than a hunter, more than his teeth and his fins.

In a moment of stupidity, he stood, went over, and bit her on the tail.

For all the emotions and thoughts that were going through her head... His words just added more confusion to it all. She knew she was a predator because it was in her dream, in her name. Was she not supposed to follow that? And if not, then what the hell was a naming dream for anyway? She preferred the sea, the ocean, to all this swamp nonsense. It was never less or more; it just was. The swamp could never decide if it was heat or humidity, if it was for kimeti or more, if it was paradise or hell.

For what sense he might have made, it all fell into the shade when he bit her.

Breach yelped, scrambling upright and glowering at the damn fish. She'd been right the first time! He was awful and terrible and she'd trounce him!

"What the hell did you do that for?" she bellowed, "I thought you didn't want to fight me!?" It sure seemed an awful lot like he wanted to piss her off and get himself killed.

Sand Shark was grinning like an idiot, his tail almost doglike as it wagged in delight.

“Ey now, ey! You said you wouldn’t know merry if it bit you. So you knew that wasn’t merry, whatever it was you thought of it! But you definitely had thoughts about it, right?”

Breach huffed, "I was starting to think I might be crazy but now I know you're the crazy one!" Who the hell bit someone on a whim? She couldn't help rankling like an owlcat thrown into water. And what sense did that make anyway? He wasn't merry; he might be stupid, though.

"I need less thoughts in my head, not more," she argued. "And this just proves my point of not knowing who you are because you keep changing!" Fish were supposed to be food anyway, not friends or enemies...

“S’better to think more, yeah? Make yourself consider new things. Try new things. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with bein’ challenged, love!” He countered, still all too delighted with how much he seemed to be getting to her. If she was certain, if she believed in this, she wouldn’t be so worked up and emotional. No, this was a doe who was thinking. Being challenged. His grin grew wider, all sharp teeth and jagged edges.

“Ey now, love. I’m not no fish. I may looks like one, but I’m completely and totally me. Can’t go around callin’ everyfin’ with fins a fish. That ain’t how it works!”

"You think biting someone makes them consider things?" she asked, incredulous. "You could still be you and a fish. They're not mutually exclusive like being a tree and a bird." Of course, now she was just nitpicking because he probably wasn't a fish. At least, she had yet to meet one that could talk. Even so, that didn't give him any right to bite her. That was uncalled for.

"I should have taken the lynx," she muttered to herself, before striding up to the blasted acha. With narrowed eyes, she stared at him, "You definitely aren't sane whether you're a fish or not." Which considering he'd bitten her... She might have had a point.
