name: After a long and difficult cold season, a young totoma went out every day to search for something besides the dead leaves and cold ground. The hunting had grown thin, but the totoma was patient in their ever-widening search. The winter seemed to drag on forever.
At last, sheltered by a cliff in an out of the way area by the spring, he found the first signs of new growth. Fresh green buds, sheltered and insulated by the snow.
So it went every year, until the tribe became used to relying on the totoma to nose out the new growths and the best of the swamp's greenest offerings. He could always be relied on to find something good, green, and new, and they called him Newfound.

He greeted his partner with a tentative nose touch.
Could they really do really do something cool?
For many days, he woke up early and stayed on the beaches with his new friend until the moon was high, watching and trying to learn what he could.
He watched the push and pull of the tides, the activity that came to life across the naked shore, the flash of fins at night, the buzz of insects drinking from the tidal pools. He listened to the gulls and watched them circle.
At the end of his vigil, he asked if he could have the offal from the tribe's catch, the innards and guts, the most offensive of the rotting discards.
To the world of sand and sea, the smell of the dead was choicer than the ripest fruit.
The shuppy was faster than he was, all hunting instinct, springing towards anything on land or sea that betrayed itself with a scuttle or a stir in the water.
Soon he was bringing back bountiful returns. Huge crabs. Hulking fish. All it took was a little guts.
