Capable returns despite the fishy situation previously. She places a new pebble on the swamp and is rewarded with a chilling noise that sets her fur on end. The wail fades slowly, the air carrying it away into nothing.

Capable tilts her head. Her ears perk up. Her tail begins to wave, slowly at first and then faster.

“AWOOOOOOO!!!” she replies to the stump.

The Black Rabbit placed a pebble on the stump, taking in the scent of the wood. It smelled of sap, but underneath, unmistakably was rot.

They waited and heard a soft clatter and something rolled from the stump. Carefully, they lent their head down and ran their nose and jaw over the object. A smile stretched across their lips.

They hooked the skull with a deft movement onto one of their antlers, where it stuck proudly.

Prompt Response: 16. You hear a buzzing noise. Your first thought is - not the bees! But they aren't bees, they're mosquitoes. Which is worse?

Stillness of the Tomb peered curiously into the stump. He heard a noise. So much that it should be fanfare right? Were the bugs having a party? As soon as that thought crossed his mind, it clicked what it was. They were bees. He reared his head back to run for the trees. To his horror, he was completely wrong. They surrounded him and began to feast. They were mosquitoes.

Prompt Response:28. You receive a beautiful cluster of feathers and flowers.

Avid sighed. She would love to take home the feathers and flowers, but already the other kin started to whisper. They called her a hoarder. But the feathers and flowers were so lovely. She could find a use for them. Throwing caution and strangers' condemnation to the wind, she took home the stump's offering. "Thanks!"

You feed the Stump a painful memory.
Image
Haunted night felt the overwhelming sense of dread and started to become nervous as she watched the looming shadow come even closer. It was whispering to her and she couldn't understand anything that it was saying. She shut her eyes tight as if that was going to make it disappear and for the nightmare to come to an end. She counted to ten before she opened her eyes to look face to face with the shadow creature. She jumped back away from it to give more space between them. She didn't want it that close to her because she could feel the cold emanating from it as a sharp reminder of the night she was left behind. It was as the cold set in to her core and there was no more warmth left, she realized what the shadow was whispering to her. It was all of the words that she had cried out for no one to hear.
I'm right here! The shadow cried in a whisper as it inched closer to her face. Why are you leaving me behind? She took step after step away from the looming shadow but it seemed to only grow bigger, easily filling the space she had created. Come back please Haunted shook her head and shut her eyes tight. She didn't want to remember being left behind and alone for so long. They had been running away from something already but she couldn't even remember what it was anymore. The bitter, painful memory of being to slow and left behind covered up any traces of the memory.
You never belonged with them The shadow was starting to talk in a deeper voice but hadn't moved any closer or away from her. She shook her head and screamed out at the shadow. "You lie! They loved me but they were scared!" She screamed as sadness and hatred filled her heart. "They didn't mean to leave me!" She had told herself the same thing over and over every day until she believed it to be true.
The shadow laughed at her and how pitiful she was for believing such a lie. She closed her eyes as she felt tears burn her eyes. You belong with me The shadow said triumphantly as it came even closer and then engulfed her in the inky darkness. She was instantly transported back to that day where she was alone, cold and scared. She had no idea if she was reliving it all over again or just being made to remember it in such a horrible way. She clenched her eyes shut again but it was no use. The cold was harsher than before and she couldn't think straight anymore. The endless whispers continued to fill her ears as she stood in place. Where could she even run to? She had no idea where safety could even be found. A strange noise filled the darkness around her and she instantly remembered having to hide in thick brush that day.
It was that horrible haunted night that she laid eyes upon something she had never seen before nor did she ever want to see again. She was to young to make out what it could have actually been. All she knew was that it was what sent them running and it was enough for her to be afraid. She had no idea how long she had stayed in that thick brush. The darkness that now surrounded her wasn't easing up with the painful words. It meant to cut into her just to open the wounds again. She collapsed to the ground or what she believed to be the ground. "Please no more." She begged as she sank her head down to lay upon the ground. She didn't know how much more of this she could take because the memory of the night was already playing in her mind over and over. She didn't need the dark whispers or deep voices of lies or truth to make it hurt any worse. She tried to bring herself to think of the life she now had but she was so overwhelmed by the darkness, it was no use. "Enough!" She cried out as one final last attempt to end it all and bring some sort of light back to her.
The darkness seemed to fade away from her as a deep and dark laughter echoed around her. She slowly lifted her head to see that she was completely fine and had never left. Haunted night slowly stood and then cursed at the stump. She was never coming back to this cursed place and regretted coming in the first place. She had buried that night of abandonment deep down inside but that stump had made it come back to life.

14. A beautiful red apple rolls out of the Stump.

Sparkling Sunrise had to admit she was very hesitant to return to the Stump, but not hesitant enough. She found herself standing across the thoroughfare from the Stump and watching for a while before she walked over with her pebble. Yes, what happened last time scared her. But, she didn't understand it, and that just made her want to know more.

Taking a deep breath, she dropped the pebble in. It did its mysteriously long period of clacking around inside while she stepped back to see what was going to pop out the bottom of the Stump. When the shiny, red apple appeared, she was not sure how to feel. Or if she should eat it? For a few moments, she just stared at it. She took a step forward and dipped her head low to sniff it. It smelled like an apple. It looked like an apple. She could hear her father now, stressing to her that anything coming from mysterious stumps was probably not safe to eat. For now, she gently grabbed it up in her mouth and took it back to her home. She'd let it sit a while before she ate it, just to see if something happens.

25. A small crab crawls out of the Stump and eyes you judgmentally.

Sparkling Sunrise quickly returned to the Stump, a little relaxed that her first go of the day was not something scary. The apple was unnerving, sure, but it wasn't running or leaping after her. The pebble in her mouth felt heavy as she approached the Stump once again. She glanced up as a few figures drifted in the mist. That wasn't something she could avoid forever, she knew. Whatever she became in the mists was the most confusing part of the experience. Maybe next time.

For now, she dodged the mists and approached the Stump. The pebble clattered around the top of the structurally questionable stump for a second before rolling into the hole and into the depths. She wondered what would happen if you put something other than pebbles in. Or if one of those blessed by the Motherfather could change into something small and go down there. Somehow, Sparkling Sunrise felt like this Stump might be beyond the Motherfather, in some way.

When the crab scuttled out, Sparkling Sunrise gasped in delight. "Oh hey, little friend!" she chimed, leaning down to look at the creature. "Wait, are you a legendary kin? Were you reading my mind just now and decided to come out? What's it like down there?" she went on, firing off questions because this creature didn't come out ready to attack her. The crab shifted a little before looking her in the eye. It was one of the more judgmental looks she's ever received. Sparkling Sunrise paused and halted her questions, brow furrowing. "Sorry, wasn't aware crabs could look so offended. I hope I didn't badger you too much!" she called as she walked away. Time to give that crab some space and grab one more pebble.

29. A small skull rolls out of the Stump.

Sparkling Sunrise approached with the intention of going into the mists again, but felt a pit in her stomach drop when she actually made it to the Stump. She retreated a few steps. Maybe next time. There was still plenty of things to find out about what she understood was the Regular Stump. She took a deep breath and decided that was the best course of action. No sense in stressing over the Winter Market anyways! It was supposed to be fun! The idea of fun definitely made her feel a bit better.

With a little bit more of a spring in her step, she approached the Stump. When she thought about the Regular Stump versus the Not-Stump, the things that came out of the Regular Stump were a lot less worrying. She dropped the pebble in with a smile and took a step back. The noise that followed the clacking of the pebble going into the Stump Abyss was one she wasn't sure of. She narrowed her eyes, trying to analyze the sound, but they widened again when a small skull rolled out and rested against her front feet.

"Hmm," she mused, "Why was the apple scarier than this?" she asked herself. Maybe it was the finality of the skull that made her less weary of it over the apple. "I wonder what...or who, oh goodness...you go to," she said, peeking down at the skull. Certainly something to look into! She'd have to talk to someone who knew a lot about animals. Maybe Strange Creature. Or My Tracks. Or Content. Surely, one of them would know. She looked at it a few more times before picking it up. It didn't look like it should belong to a kin. She was not sure what she would do if it did.

14. You feed the Stump a memory of when you were let down by someone.
The kin that looked back at him was a shadowy version of his former self. It pushed a specific memory to the surface.

They were trapped. They were hungry. They relied on him and his older brothers to survive. But his brothers had fallen one by one. He relied on them to show him how to be strong, be reliable, be alive. They did not. He persisted nonetheless.

The memory left a bad taste in his mouth. He looks at his reflection in the stump and gives it a grimace. The memory it took was not pleasant. He is glad to be free of it.

She was supposed to have brought the berries for the juice. The juice was meant for the best end-of-winter feast. She'd been reminded over and over again about making sure the berries would keep, has she stored them somewhere safe, is she sure she could bring the berries.

She said yes.

She forgot.
