Delta Runner

Post by Patmos »

There is nothing so exhilarating as running through the delta pools, bright sunlight turning the surface to sparks of gold, the wind searing against her skin.

The ache to run again will not take long to come back.

Traitor's Moon

Post by Patmos »

Night in the swamp. A dark moon hangs silent and brooding over the trees, and even the stars are blotted out by ragged clouds scudding across the sky. He looks up through a break in the canopy as he waits, knowing that this meeting is a fool’s errand, but unable to help himself. It is as inevitable as the stages of the moon.

His partner is to meet him here, his first love, but the sense of dread that fills him tells him that it will not be with adoration and sweet smiles. His love will come to betray him. It is a bittersweet thing, for despite the knowledge, he still loves that one.

And the worst part is that he intends to be a traitor to his love in return.

Glimpses

Post by Patmos »

The flashes of sound...
                • color...
                    • pictures...
all go too fast to be recognized.
                • The fleeting emotions are
there
and
gone
                • before it can even be known what they are.
It is not a series of vague feeling, but all of them

sharp and cutting,

and were she able to stop them long enough, she would know them with the greatest intimacy.

She longs to know it, what each glimpse means, but at the same time she is utterly terrified to look at them, to feel beyond what anyone else has.

Swiftly Tilting

Post by Patmos »

The concepts of light and dark flickering... the stomach-jerking sensation of lifting off the ground, head light and floating... wind rushing over my back... I wonder if I will ever reach the ground again... cool mist and fog (clouds?)... I break through the layer into a cold that I think should burn and does not... I am protected somehow... All is dark now, save for a slew of pinpoints of light above me that sing the most beautiful song... It seems to be building to some wonderful moment...
    • I wait...

                • Bright light pierces the darkness and arcs around a curve.
                    •
I am not blinded, but stunned, as the rising sun shows a thing I can barely comprehend; a massive ball of blues, greens, and browns begins to be revealed and I am rocked by how large everything is. I feel small, so small that it is almost crushing, and yet I know I am loved by something bigger than all this.
•

I float amid the song and the new light, the swiftly tilting planet below me spinning in infinity, a concept I comprehend for a single, glorious moment before I flicker back to darkness, and am left bereft of the knowledge I have just experienced.

Plague Star

Post by Patmos »

((This will be moved once I catch up))

There is a hill that makes a magnificent spot for star-gazing. The night is cool, kissed with the memory of the warm, humid day. Out here the breeze refreshes; high above the same early evening breeze whips away the clouds.

Tonight there is a gathering, many young kin cluster around to see the famous streaking stars that have been spotted of late. Elder kin stick to the breaking of the trees, indulgent in letting the young get a peek first. As the sky becomes visible in patches, then young start giggling and calling out when they spy the shooting pins of light in the sky. One, then two, three and more. They exclaim in awe as many light the sky, so numerous it is like all of the heavens are falling to the horizon.

All at once the sky clears. Silence falls as from the right emerges a steadier star. This one is far different. Slowly, it stalks the sky, a red as deep as blood and bright as the moon. It is like a predator, waiting for it's prey to get close.

There are murmurs in the crowd, confusion over this strange body in the sky. Finally, an elder is escorted to the top of the hill. They are so old they limp, head hanging low and tired, but they are wise and respected. The young part to allow them through. Like the sun slowly rising, they lift their head to the sky. Red light winks in their weak eyes.

"The plague star!" they announce in their dry husk voice. "It is an omen. We must prepare for illness to come."
